Students plug into their future through kiosks

By Eva Ruth Moravec - Express-News

It took Alvarez three years to create a digital kiosk that displays and prints information and applications for financial aid, admission to Texas colleges, exams and high-demand job information and statistics.

He hopes that through the kiosks he can encourage more students to attend college and help lower the number of high school dropouts in San Antonio.

A pilot model has been at Northside Independent School District's O'Connor High School for the past year, and now there are 25 machines on campuses citywide. Since Jan. 31, 2008, when he installed the kiosk at O'Connor, Alvarez said students there spent an average of 18 minutes on the machine each visit.

In the beginning, O'Connor head counselor Ivette Bruno said the kiosk was in the counseling center, out of students' sight, which she said was not ideal.

"The information was very limited at first, but the kiosk has been beneficial," Bruno said. "Now that the students know what it is, they have enjoyed exploring careers, colleges and jobs."

A digital screen above the student information portal displays advertising- a revenue stream that Alvarez said allows him to give campuses the machines at no cost to the schools.

Alvarez said students are “a captive audience” for advertisements while using the machines, but they can choose to ignore the muted messages simply by not looking up.

While Alvarez is still looking for funding for his new endeavor, the small-business expert has prompted interest from several potential partners, many thanks no doubt to his history. In 2001, he sold his Rio Grande Valley-based 27-restaurant franchise, which brought him more than $25 million in annual revenue.

Kiosk Deployment Underway!

Deployment Manager Adam Fischer and IKS VP Joey Medina load kiosks for South Texas deployment

A very wise man once said, "Happiness is the anticipation of the culmination of a goal."

Though words like happiness usually are ascribed to individuals rather than companies like iKiosk Solutions, the deployment of our kiosks to high schools throughout South Texas has made stakeholders in IKS happy indeed.

The dream of seeing curious high school students step up to the kiosk to see what it's all about, only to find answers to college questions, has come true.

IKS Chief Executive Officer and Founder Tony Alvarez said, "Academic information on the kiosks will allow students to examine higher education options and create lifelong opportunities for their lives and the lives of future generations." As their lives improve, society also becomes a benefactor in creating a stronger, more competitive workforce."

IKS Chief Operating Officer Bertha Cervantes said, "With family budgets strained more than ever, parents realize how crucial it is to find ways to help their teens get into college.

"Our kiosks make the college process easier for students to understand, and provides them with real options for collegiate success." At a recent national symposium about curtailing the high dropout rate in America, an award winning school principal observed that, "a student would rather be thought of as bad than unintelligent."

By allowing students access to the kiosk to use at their own pace, they become empowered and begin to feel more a part of their surroundings at school, making them less likely to drop out and more likely to move on after high school to college or vocational training.

Though IKS kiosks are not the ultimate answer to the dropout problem and an under-prepared workforce, we endeavor to bring a ray of light into the darkness; offering one positive step in helping to reverse some of the negative trends in today's educational systems.

As more kiosks are deployed to high schools in Texas, California and beyond, that ray of light will brighten exponentially, and one day we hope to provide kiosk-based academic information on every campus in America. Another aspect of kiosk deployment that has pleased stakeholders has been the advent of bringing the relatively new medium of interactive digital media into the forefront.

IKS National Sales Manager Stephanie Schillaci said, “This is only the beginning of the most exciting era of digital media. It’s an excellent way for advertisers to reach the coveted youth market during school hours.”

IKS offers a unique way for advertisers to brand their products by using interactive digital advertising. Interactive digital advertising influences the way consumers think because they not only get to see it, they get to touch the screen and interact with it.

Interactive Digital Advertising Tells a Story

Because interactive digital advertising is a relatively new technology, consumers may not be fully aware of its capabilities.

Imagine if you will our kiosk’s screensaver, featuring a photo of a pair of name-brand athletic shoes.

A student walks by the screen and touches it out of curiosity, only to have the screen rapidly switch to a “build your own pair” site, where the teen can customize the shoes with colors, patterns, shoelaces and specific soles.

Once the teen sees what options are available according to his or her specific tastes, the urge to own a pair begins!

That’s just one exciting feature of interactive digital advertising, but the possibilities are limitless
